Subject: Wireless networking available in/near Zepler

Hi,

If you are interested in trying wireless networking in ECS you may now
loan Orinoco (WaveLAN) PCMCIA cards from Zepler Stores. These should
work in any standard PC laptop slot, and will offer networking speeds
up to 11Mbit/s (as per standard 802.11b).

At present, the wireless coverage is only ground floor of Zepler, in
particular the reception area, Seminar Rooms 1 and 2, and the area
immediately outside the building (so in theory you could access
the Internet while sat outside on the low wall by the entrance).

When connecting you should set your laptop to use DHCP for network and
DNS server information, and you can set the wireless LAN name to "ANY".
Zepler Stores has CDs with drivers included for Windows and Linux
platforms. The IP address you will be allocated will be one outside
of the internal ECS network.

Further information will be available via the ECS Systems & Support web
pages soon.

If you wish to use your own wireless cards, please let us know. The cost
of a Silver Orinoco card varies between 75 and 110 pounds at present.
Some handheld devices, such as the Compaq iPAQ, support 802.11b, but we
have not yet been able to test them with the Orinoco cards.

Feedback is welcome.

Tim
