Child process: "Ouch! I've been shot! I'm dying..." *plop*
Linux Kernel: *ding-dong* "Somebody has died, let's see why?"
Linux Kernel examines the exit status and tells parent:
*ring-ring* "Excuse me, parent, your child Nr. 1445 has died."
Parent process: "Oh, my sweetie's been shot dead! Never mind,
                        I'll just make another one."
